Charges Filed in Fort Lupton Shooting That Critically Injured Officer

GREELEY, Colo. (Weld County D.A.) – A nineteen year old man has been charged for shooting a Fort Lupton officer in the face earlier this week.

Weld County District Attorney Michael Rourke Friday morning charged Matthew Cotter of Lochbuie with the following counts:

COUNT 1: CRIMINAL ATTEMPT TO COMMIT MURDER IN THE FIRST DEGREE (F2)

COUNT 2: CRIMINAL ATTEMPT TO COMMIT MURDER IN THE FIRST DEGREE (F2)

COUNT 3: ASSAULT IN THE FIRST DEGREE (F3)

COUNT 4: ASSAULT IN THE FIRST DEGREE ON A PEACE OFFICER (F3)

COUNT 5: ASSAULT IN THE FIRST DEGREE ON A PEACE OFFICER (F3)

COUNT 6: CRIMINAL ATTEMPT TO COMMIT ASSAULT IN THE FIRST DEGREE (F4)

Cotter is accused of firing at Sergeant Christopher Pelton and another officer who were responding to a call about a man with a gun who was trying to make contact with a person inside a Fort Lupton home Monday night.

Sgt. Pelton was critically injured and is recovering from injuries.

The defendant is still being treated for injuries and has not yet been booked into the Weld County Jail.

Therefore, a court date for Cotter has not yet been set.

District Attorney Michael Rourke and Chief Deputy District Attorney Anthony Perea will be prosecuting this case.

The shooting is still being investigated by the Weld County Critical Incident Response Team.
