GREELEY, Colo. (Weld County D.A.) – A former Evans caregiver tasked with watching dementia patients will spend the next 7.5 years in the Weld County Jail.

A jury convicted Briana Mashek, 29, of Evans, of five counts of at-risk neglect after she left her shift last year without notifying supervisors.

According to the affidavit, another caregiver arrived at the Ashley Manor Assisted Living Facility in Evans on September 4, 2017, for her overnight shift when she found five patients without care or supervision.

The five victims, ranging from 74 to 93-years-old, all required 24-hour care. One patient, according to the police report, fell from her chair and was left on the floor for more than four hours.

All of the patients were left without food and medications and had not been re-positioned or able to use the restroom for about six hours.

Mashek later told police, according to the affidavit, that she had not been getting along with her boss and decided to leave. She told an officer that she did not notify her boss or supervisor before leaving.

A judge sentenced Mashek to 18 months at the Weld County Jail for each named victim in the case.

Each sentence will run consecutively, for a total of 7.5 years. Deputy District Attorneys Trenton Ghoram and Lacy Wells prosecuted this case.
