GREELEY, Colo. (Weld County D.A.) – A Weld County man will spend the rest of his natural life in prison for murdering his mother in 2022.
Andrew Sweatt, 28, shot and killed his mother, Angela Eyestone, at their Greeley home on December 8, 2022.
When Greeley police arrived at the residence, they found Eyestone unresponsive. She was later pronounced deceased at a local hospital.
The investigation revealed Sweatt shot his mother ten times with a handgun he purchased the day before.
On Wednesday morning, following an eight day trial, a Weld County jury convicted Sweatt of first-degree murder.
“There are no winners here today,” Chief Deputy District Attorney Michael Pirraglia said. “This was a senseless act. It was a cold killing and this defendant has had such a callous attitude about it all. Angela was so much to so many people. She cared and made places better. No family should be grieving the way this family is grieving here today.”
Following the guilty verdict, Weld County District Court Judge Vincente Vigil sentenced Sweatt to life without the possibility of parole in the Colorado Department of Corrections.
“Though the defense argued this was second-degree murder, there’s only one correct charge that was supported by the jury and that was first-degree murder,” Pirraglia said. “I appreciate the jurors and appreciate their time and attention during this trial. Justice has been served today.”
In addition to Pirraglia, Deputy District Attorney Mikaela Fatzinger also prosecuted this case.
