GREELEY, Colo. (Weld County D.A.) – A former Mead High School girl’s basketball coach is facing up to 144 years-to-life in prison after a Weld County jury convicted him of several sex-related charges involving female athletes.

After a three-week long trial, 33-year-old George Sagner was convicted of the following charges last week: three counts of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust as part of a pattern of abuse, one count of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust involving a victim under 15 as part of a pattern of abuse, one count of sexual assault on a child – pattern of abuse, one additional count of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust, and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

The case began with a Safe2Tell tip in 2021. The tip stated that the defendant had an inappropriate relationship with one of his players.

The investigation uncovered that he had sexual relationships with at least three of his players throughout the past decade, one of which lasted more than two years. The defendant would also sometimes provide the victims with alcohol and marijuana before sexually assaulting them.

This investigation was a collaborative effort between the Mead Police Department, the Weld County Sheriff’s Office, the Longmont Police Department and both the Boulder County and Weld County District Attorney’s Office.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for January 6th at 2:00 p.m. in Division 15. The defendant is facing 10 to 144 years-to-life in the Colorado Department of Corrections.

In addition to Chief Deputy District Attorney Arynn Clark, Deputy District Attorney Raja Salaymeh also prosecuted this case.
