Man faces 96 years for stealing cars, robbing two banks with gun

GREELEY, Colo. (Weld County D.A.) – A Denver man faces almost a century behind bars, after a Weld County jury convicted him of stealing two rental cars, and robbing two banks at gun point during the summer of 2018.
Billy Ray Hendrix, 58, was convicted last week of: two counts of aggravated robbery, six counts of felony menacing with a deadly weapon, two counts of theft, and two counts of motor vehicle theft.
In June of 2018, Hendrix stole a 2017 Hyundai Accent from Enterprise Rent-A-Car at Denver International Airport.
The defendant used that car to rob at gunpoint the 1st Bank branch located at 1779 CO-7 in Erie, where he used a Biore facemask to attempt to conceal his identity.
The defendant then abandoned the car at the Orchard Towne Center in Westminster. When detectives found the vehicle, they found pieces of the Biore facemask in the car, and submitted the evidence to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation for DNA analysis.
In July of 2018, the defendant went back to Enterprise Rent-A-Car at DIA to steal another vehicle.
As he was leaving, the rear tires were punctured by the spike strip at the exit gate. The defendant made it about a mile down the road and abandoned the vehicle.
He then used his own silver sedan to rob at gunpoint the TBK Bank in La Salle.
Detectives were able to identify Hendrix through a DNA hit they received from the Biore facemask.
During the second armed robbery, the defendant wore the same shirt, beanie and glasses he wore when he robbed the bank in Erie.
Next month, a judge will determine whether Hendrix is convicted of one count of a habitual offender charge. If he’s convicted, he faces 96 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections.
That hearing is scheduled for December 22 at 8:30 a.m.
Deputy District Attorney Patrick Roche and Chief Deputy District Attorney Michael Pirraglia are prosecuting this case.
