On Monday, June 7, Weld District Attorney Michael Rourke issued a letter and report to Weld County Sheriff Steve Reams and Dacono Police Chief Matthew Skaggs in regard to the fatal officer involved shooting of Smokey Crockett on April 17 in Weld County.
The 19th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) conducted the investigation which was provided to the District Attorney’s Office.
Based on the thorough CIRT investigation, DA Rourke has determined the Weld County Sheriff’s deputy and Dacono officer were legally justified in discharging their firearms at Crockett during the incident.
During this same incident, officers from the Fort Lupton Police Department also discharged their firearms at Crockett.
That conduct and decision-making was investigated by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, and consideration of that separate investigation is ongoing.
At this time, no additional information will be released.
The full letter and report can be read on our website.
