GREELEY, Colo. (Weld County D.A.) – A Weld County man will spend decades in prison after a Weld County jury convicted him in February of firing 59 shots into a Greeley bar in November of 2024.
On Wednesday, Weld County District Court Judge Annette Kundelius sentenced Jimmy Cazares, 33, to 96 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections.
On November 30, 2024, officers with the Greeley Police Department responded to reports of a shooting at Wyler’s Pub and Brew, located in the 2300 block of 27th Street.
When police arrived, they found a female employee who had been shot multiple times, including once in the neck.
Officers also identified a second victim inside the bar who had not been struck by gunfire but was in the direct line of fire. Both victims survived the shooting.
About 40 minutes prior to the shooting, bartenders had kicked the defendant out of the bar for fighting.
“My life changed forever that night,” one of the victims said during Wednesday’s sentencing hearing. “I never could have imagined I was being shot at. I firmly believe I died for a brief moment.”
In February Cazares was found guilty of all charges, including: two counts of attempted murder after deliberation involving a deadly weapon, two counts of attempted murder due to extreme indifference with a deadly weapon, possession of a weapon by a previous offender, possession of an unserialized weapon and criminal mischief causing damages of more than $20,000 but not more than $100,000.
In addition, a jury also convicted him of two drug-related counts.
“It’s only by the grace of God that no one was killed that night,” Deputy District Attorney Lacy Wells said. “He gunned down two women at a local, community establishment and clearly has no respect for human life.”
“Damage didn’t stop when the bullets stopped,” Wells said. “These victims of this horrific and senseless crime will live with the mental, emotional and physical damage the rest of their lives.”
Under the law, the defendant faced a maximum of 134 years in prison.
Deputy District Attorney Lacy Wells and Deputy District Attorney Mikaela Fatzinger prosecuted this case.
