Prison Sentence for Man Who Threatened to Kill Ex-Girlfriend

GREELEY, Colo. (Weld County D.A.) – A Pierce man was sentenced to prison for almost two decades for holding a female inside his car against her will, assaulting her, and threatening to kill her.
A judge sentenced 29-year-old Jeremy Wortman last week to 18 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to Attempted Kidnapping in the First Degree as an act of domestic violence in Weld District Court.
On February 27, Wortman met the victim in the parking lot of Outriders Bar and Grill on 10th Street in Greeley to discuss parenting and custody issues regarding their young child.
The victim entered Wortman’s vehicle and the defendant drove off against her will.
The victim attempted to secretly make a call to 911 dispatchers from her cell phone while the defendant continued to drive around Weld County. The situation escalated when the defendant wrecked his car, crossing four lanes of traffic and blowing out a tire.
While the defendant checked on the vehicle’s damage, the victim was able to secretly record the rest of the incident on her cell phone.
However, the defendant continued to drive recklessly, eventually shredding all of the rubber from the damaged tire and proceeded to drive on the metal rim. Dispatchers received calls from concerned citizens who watched the defendant run red lights while sparks flew from his vehicle. They also reported seeing the victim attempting to open the door and trying to jump from the moving vehicle.
During the course of the 27 minute incident, Wortman is heard on the audio recording threatening to kill the victim while she begged for her life.
The victim told police she also sent several texts to her friend and father from her phone which she hid from the defendant.
Her friends and family were able to relay information to dispatchers to help locate the defendant and victim which led to Wortman’s arrest.
Deputy District Attorney Andrew Rogers prosecuted this case.
